Though the anthropology of media is a still emerging field within social anthropology, intermediality has turned out to be a particularly stimulating topic. The trajectories of images and contents across medial borders reveal how culture is negotiated in the context of social change. The seminar adopts a double perspective at such processes: It looks at how the media influence the negotiation of culture, and it looks at how cultural practices shape the use of media and their social significance. Case studies will come from various African societies, but other areas are also addressed if they fit into the program of the seminar. Communication in the seminar will be in English. All presenters will have to provide a handout (1–2 pages) in English a week before their presentation. Full papers (20–25 pages) are due at the end of the semester and may be written in German, English or French. |
