Inhalt
This seminar intends to address recent ethnological issues in the anthropology of Africa. The actual choice of topics depends on the interests of the participants. However, some emphasis will be laid on two more general themes: 1. The post-colonial African state in everyday life, and 2. the popular imagery of modernity and its aesthetic practice. Discussions will first catch on the themes outlined by the literature mentioned below, but other publications on the two themes are most welcome. Both themes need an interdisciplinary approach: sociology and political science political for the first topic and art history for the latter will be helpful to cope with the subjects. Students who study sociology or political science or art history as a minor or those who have a special interest in these disciplines are especially invited to engage in the discussion. All participant are also invited to suggest topics of their own, if recent publications on that issue are available.

Teaching and communication in the class will be in English, but you may also use German. Papers may be written in English, French or German.
