This seminar aims at introducing students into a new field of social anthropology, the anthropol-ogy of media. Until recently, the study of art and material culture included the study of media – if media were addressed at all. However, new theoretical insights open ways of addressing visual media from a novel perspective. The seminar thus starts with an evaluation of some of the major publications in the field. In particular the concepts of image, picture, media and mediality will be examined from an anthropological point of view. We will then try to link these and other, related concepts to methodological questions. The second half of the seminar is dedicated to empirical questions and ethnographic studies. Since the early 1990s, a growing number of studies proved that the study of media offered new ways of understanding many older issues in anthropology. At the same time, a number of new is-sues arose during the last decade or two. They will be addressed by student working groups on questions like the ones to follow: 1. Some scholars claim that the concepts of picture and image provide new insights into the mediality of visual media, while others deny this. What then may be their contribution to anthropology? 2. Local communities increasingly make use of media in order to have an impact on the national political arena. The question here is how this affects their identity. 3. Media may be instruments of domination as well as resistance. Does their presence alter the character of political and/or economic relations? |
