| Ethnicity has been one of the major concerns of the colonial as well as the post-colonial state in Africa. However, the approach to this crucial issue underwent a significant metamorphosis from the late 19th century till the first years of the 21st century. This course examines the changing role of ethnicity in processes of state formation and change as well as in anthropological interpretations of these processes. While colonial anthropology tended to look at ethnic groups as unchanging entities, anthropologists now look at the various ways people express their differences from others and how they use ethnic labels as instruments in the political arenas of post-colonial society. Moreover, processes of globalization are linked to increasing ethnic heterogeneity which, in turn, is often interpreted as a challenge to the sovereignty of the post-colonial African state.
There is an enormous amount of publications on ethnicity in general. However, the necessity to combine methodological approaches from the political sciences with the more qualitative research in anthropology hasn’t led to many publications. The course therefore will try to address questions from an interdisciplinary perspective. |
