The African Statein Comparative Perspective
| |
Inhalt |
The post-colonial African state is often seen more or less exclusively
as successor to the former colonial state. African states are therefore
perceived as deficient examples of modern states. However, the implicit
concept is misleading. The history of domination and centralised power
in Africa predates European presence by centuries, and many modes of
societal and political action in Africa today show continuities to
elder, pre-colonial structures. On the other hand, colonialism
transformed the political space in all African countries. It is a
challenge to all social sciences to develop concepts that take
pre-colonial continuities seriously while also acknowledging the
ruptures created by colonial rule. Patrick Chabal is one of the
leading scholars in the field of political sciences in Africa. He has
devoted most of his scholarly life to the questions raised above. He is
the first visiting professor of the recently founded Center for African
Studies Basel. His seminar is open to all who are interested in this
and related topics, especially to postgraduate students and PhD
candidates. Communication will be in English and French. A general reading list is available as pdf-file (download) and in
the seminar's folder in the Institute for Social Anthropology.
You may also read Patrick Chabal's inaugural lecture (download). |

Vorbesprechung des Blockseminars: 8. April 2003, 12.15 Uhr (Seminarraum des Ethnologischen Seminars)
Every student is expected to present a short handout of not more
than two or three pages on his or her specific interest. The handouts
should be ready by May 10 so that Professor Chabal may read them in
advance. The seminar will then serve as a platform for discussion of
every individual topic. You should be able to give a short
supplemenatry outline if you want to write a longer paper
later. Do not forget to write in English! |
