Inhalt
Agency and creativity are loosely defined notions in everyday language. In the humanities, they had been used in many fields to point at how people actively shape their social and cultural worlds. However, they were seldom developed into reflected concepts for the analysis of social life. While some art historians reduce creativity to individuals and how they bring novel things into being, anthropologists examine and analyze more the social and cultural sites of creativity and link it to the complementary notion of agency. The seminar focuses on the tension between individual and social agency on the one hand and the collaborative dimensions of creativity on the other. It first reviews the scholarly literature in the humanities and in particular in anthropology and sociology on the concepts. In a second part, it looks at case studies in the fields of the arts, the production of cultural knowledge, in social and religious practice, and in political institutions.
